A Message from Father Herbert:

FatherHerbertFrom the Vicar:

Today marks the end of my first three months here at Church of Our Saviour. In the back of my mind I have, from the beginning, seen this three month period as a sort of a "honeymoon" or "grace period" that I could use to get my feet on the ground, take stock and prepare for the work to be done. As I see it, this period ends with the Celebration of New Ministry that will take place on January 11, as I am installed as your Vicar. Not too much has happened in these three months really, except for the bazaar followed the next day by the Bishop's visit, and then Thanksgiving and then my ordination followed by my first Christmas here. Well, maybe a few things have happened.

All of this has prepared me for the work at hand and I am so excited to be here and am looking forward to all of it. We will be starting a youth group very soon as Margaret,  Lori and I will be meeting with Paris Ball from the Diocese next week to talk about the vast array of youth programming that we can work with. We'll discuss steps towards confirmation as well. Next week I will begin to fulfill the promise I made when I got here, to visit all of the parishioners. I am excited about spending some time with you. I will be in touch with all of you.

We also have Annual Council coming up, followed by our own annual meeting. One of the things we'll be discussing is plans for a new building, which goes hand in hand with the youth group and any other new ministries that we develop here at Church of Our Saviour.

 It is an exciting time to be here, and I am thankful every day for the warmth of this congregation and the promise of things to come.

          Thanks be to God!

 Faithfully in Christ,

 HerbertSignature

Jane's Music Memos:

 Did you hear the Zimbelstern?

During the month of December, you probably heard some "bells" on the organ.  These randomly-sounded bells were actually a stop on the pipe organ known as the "Zimblestern" which literally means "cymbal star".  The bells were originally rung by a rotating wheel that was shaped like a star. These would have been popular in Europe during the Baroque period, particularly Germany, in the 16th-18th centuries.

Nicholas Cabell played the hymn "Let All Mortal Flesh" using this stop which added an ethereal feeling to the French carol.

Let all mortal flesh keep silence,
And with fear and trembling stand;
Ponder nothing earthly minded,
For with blessing in His hand,
Christ our God to earth descendeth,
Our full homage to demand.

King of kings, yet born of Mary,
As of old on earth He stood,
Lord of lords, in human vesture,
In the body and the blood;
He will give to all the faithful
His own self for heavenly food.

The stop was also used at the 11pm Christmas Eve service for the prelude, "In Dulci Jubilo", by J. S. Bach.

COS Angel Tree

The COS "Angel Tree" was fulfilled beyond expectations by "Angels" from Church of Our Saviour.

For Christmas 2011, COOS provided gifts for four local families (Beaverdam, South Anna, and Montpelier). This covered a total of eight children and one adult. Thank you all for going above and beyond the call here. The generosity from our church was overwhelming.
