A Message from Father Herbert:
From the
Vicar:
As I do a little reflecting this week after
Thanksgiving, I realize just how much I have to be thankful for and
how truly fortunate I am, especially as I reflect on this December.
Of course, at the top of my gratitude list is my ordination, which
is something that I have been living into and anticipating in one
way or another for years. It is the fulfillment of a lifelong
dream.
But having been here at Church of Our Saviour for the
last two months adds an even greater depth to the gratitude I feel.
This is so because the importance and the meaning of my ordination
is enhanced by the fact that I am being ordained into a community
of faith that has welcomed me and nurtured me for these last two
months. I thank God for this church and I thank you all for making
me feel so welcome. I look forward to being your priest for a long
time to come and working together with you all.
During his visit, Bishop Jones talked about how the
members of every church have all of the gifts of the Holy Spirit
that are required to do whatever God wants that church to do. As I
observe all that is happening here at Church of Our Saviour I can
see the abundance of gifts that God has blessed us with. As we work
together in the years to come we can identify, nurture and develop these
gifts and do the work God has set out for us to do.
Thanks be to God for all of our many blessings!
Faithfully in Christ,
Father Herbert

Outreach
COS Outreach has been
VERY active in the past
month.
WHEAT Hotline - a team of COOS volunteers has gone
through the WHEAT Hotline training and will be handling coverage
for this 24-hour hotline during the Dec 1-15 time period.
Food Pantry - COOS has donated over 100 jars of peanut butter so
far, but please continue picking up an extra jar when you go shopping
as the number of families being served continues to rise each
month. We've also donated over 40 bags of fresh produce from the
garden. In addition, we have made around 80 of the Personal Care
kits, and have delivered around 50 so far. We are still in need of
bottles of shampoo to complete some of the kits. Thank you to
everyone who has donated food, health items, and/or time
volunteering. Remember, the Food Pantry is open the 2nd and 4th
Tuesday every month and WHEAT is always looking for volunteers. **
One local husband & wife actually donated over 30 turkeys to
the Food Pantry last week!
Thanksgiving - THANK YOU to the wonderful and generous
contributions from everyone this Thanksgiving. There were enough
donations to provide meals for three local families.
Christmas - thanks to everyone for the help with providing
Christmas gifts to four local families this year. There are still
some gifts on the tree which can be selected, so please take a look
and see if there's something you can help with. The deadline for
returning the items is Monday, December 12th.
Local Assistance - A local family recently contacted COOS for help
due to their desperate financial situation. We were able to help by
paying a portion of a household bill, provided a truckload of
firewood, and supplied their Thanksgiving meal. We worked with them
to identify other resources available such as the WHEAT Food Pantry
and the Wood Ministry. They were very grateful and surprised at how
much we did so quickly for them.
Winterization - Through the Hanover Department of Community
Resources, we have two local homes that need assistance. This is
designed to assist the elderly, persons with disabilities, and
low-income families for whom the winter weather may cause pipes to
freeze and homes to become drafty and cold. The Winterization
Program helps to provide cost effective, temporary assistance to
reduce household heat loss. I have scheduled a work day where
volunteers are need. This will take place on Saturday December
17th. I have the supplies from the county to cover windows with
plastic, weatherstrip doorframes and insulate pipes. Please let me
know if you can help out on the 17th. Danny 883-5391
Wood Ministry - So far, we have delivered 7 loads to 4 different
families this year. With the cold weather approaching, that will
likely increase
soon.
